Frequently Asked Questions
Raw Food Questions
What are the benefits to feeding raw?
There are many benefits to feeding raw, here are some highlights:
Better overall health; Increased energy for senior dogs; Less tarter buildup on teeth; Healthier skin and coat; Fresher breath; Better digestion; Decreased allergic symptoms; Easier weight management: Fewer / firmer poops!
Do I feed it frozen or thawed?
Puppies or small dogs should be fed raw thawed. However, adult dogs (with adult teeth), can eat raw frozen. Some dogs may have a preference. You can also feed somewhere in between the two!
Feeding frozen can also slow a dog down if you have a fast eater. Pro tip for feeding frozen: Feed in an enclosed area or outside to avoid your dog playing hide and seek with a frozen piece of meat!
How do I thaw the food?
The food thaws out easily in the fridge or on the counter. The food lasts well 2-3 days in the fridge. Do not microwave the food. Cooking the raw food will remove many of the nutrients.
How do I switch from kibble to raw?
It is our experience that the best way to switch is to go “cold turkey”. We recommend feeding only a small portion, thawed out for the first meal, waiting 10-20 minutes and then feeding another small portion. Feeding it in two small amounts, thawed to room temperature can help with the transition. By the second meal we usually feed a regular sized portion.
With a picky eater we suggest mixing it with whatever the current food is that you are feeding and transition slower. This may also be a consideration for senior dogs or dogs with sensitive stomachs.
For more tips on switching to raw, do not hesitate to contact us.
Can I mix raw with Kibble?
Yes, absolutely you can! There is research that shows that feeding some natural, whole food (raw) is better than not feeding any at all. So if budget or lifestyle may not allow you to feed 100% raw, it is okay to mix with kibble. Try including our high quality raw as a "topper" on your dog's kibble meal. This way you ensure he is getting all of the nutrients and vitamins that he needs!
Can I feed my dog raw bones?
Raw bones are excellent to give your dogs. They provide both enjoyment and nutrition. All RAW bones are safe to give your dog. However, never give your dog cooked bones as they can splinter and cause harm.
Do I need to worry about bacteria?
Our food is routinely laboratory tested to be sure it is free of salmonella and E. coli bacteria. We have tested negative every time!
What is our raw food made from?
We use high quality, human-grade ingredients. Our formulas have slightly different ingredients and nutritional make up. Check out the product pages for more details!
How much do I feed my dog?
Every dog is slightly different and you should observe your dog’s weight and make the appropriate adjustments. However, as a guideline see below:
Puppies: (weaning to 12 months) and pregnant/lactating mothers should receive 5-7% of their body weight. Puppies can often eat twice what an adult dog would eat.
Adult dogs: (12 months and up) will eat approximately 2% to 2.5% of their ideal body weight. However, depending on your dog’s activity level and age this can vary. These calculations are meant only as guidelines and can give you a starting point. You should increase or decrease the food for your dog as needed.
