About Raw Food

What are the benefits to feeding my dog raw dog food?

There are many benefits to feeding raw, here are some highlights:

  • Better overall health
  • Increased energy for senior dogs
  • Less tarter buildup on teeth
  • Healthier skin and coat
  • No tartar build-up, fresher breath
  • Better digestion
  • Decreased allergic symptoms
  • Easier weight management
  • Fewer / firmer poops!
Do I just give this to my dog frozen or should I defrost it?

Puppies or small dogs should be fed raw thawed. However, adult dogs (with adult teeth), can eat raw frozen. Some dogs may have a preference. Feeding frozen can also slow a dog down if you have a fast eater. Pro tip for feeding frozen: Feed in an enclosed area or outside to avoid your dog playing hide and seek with a frozen piece of meat!

How do I thaw Longevity Raw?

The food thaws out easily in the fridge or on the counter. The food lasts well 2-3 days in the fridge. Do not microwave the food. Cooking the raw food will remove many of the nutrients.

How do I switch my dog from kibble to raw food?

Dog digest raw food differently than they digest kibble. It is our experience that the best way to switch is to go “cold turkey”. We recommend feeding only a small portion, thawed out for the first meal, waiting 20-30 minutes and then feeding another small portion. If a dog gobbles the food too quickly the first time, in rare instances the dog my vomit. Feeding it in two small amounts, thawed to room temperature can help.

With a picky eater we suggest mixing it with whatever the current food is that you are feeding.

Can I mix raw food with kibble?

We do not recommend that you mix kibble and raw. Kibble contains starch (to hold it together), and that will result in changing your dog’s pH level. You can actually put your dog at risk of getting sick from bacteria and it can also lessen the amount of nutrition your dog gets from their meals.

Can I supplement with bones?

Raw bones are excellent to give your dogs. They provide both enjoyment and nutrition. All RAW bones are safe to give your dog. However, never give your dog cooked bones as they can splinter and cause harm.

What about bacteria?

Our food is routinely laboratory tested to be sure it is free of salmonella and E. coli bacteria. We have tested negative every time!

What is your raw food made from?

We use high quality, human-grade ingredients. Our three formulas have slightly different ingredients and nutritional make up. Check out the product pages for Chicken Blend, Turkey Blend, Beef Blend and Tripe and Chicken Blend.

How much food do I feed my dog?

Every dog is slightly different and you should observe your dog’s weight and make the appropriate adjustments. However, as a guideline see below:

  • Puppies: (weaning to 12 months) and pregnant/lactating mothers should receive 5-7% of their body weight. Puppies can often eat twice what an adult dog would eat.
  • Adult dogs: (12 months and up) will eat approximately 2% to 2.5% of their ideal body weight. However, depending on your dog’s activity level and age this can vary.
  • These calculations are meant only as guidelines and can give you a starting point. You should increase or decrease the food for your dog as needed.
